How to Get to the Top of Google Search

If you want customers to find your website, you must improve your Google rankings for the keywords that are most relevant to your website. When people are searching for something online, they’re not very likely to go beyond the first page of search results. In fact, the first five listings get almost two-thirds of all clicks. If you want part of the action, you need to get busy and follow these steps.

1. Fix Your Website’s SEO

Search engines don’t really care about promoting your site. They care about finding relevant content that matches what the user searched for. They do this by crawling through your content and paying attention to your title tags and meta descriptions. Your title tags can be similar to your page heading, but you should keep it under 60 characters. Your meta description can be up to 160 characters long and is supposed to be an accurate description of your page’s content.  Another topic I have previously discussed and recommend is influencer marketing to enhance your SEO. Read my previous article on SEO mistakes to avoid so you can ensure you are not tanking your website’s SEO.

2. Create Relevant Content

If you’re selling custom widgets in XYZ Town, then the content on your website should make that apparent to the search engines. You’ll want to talk about your custom widgets in as much detail as you can. For example, how are they made, where are they made, what are they used for, etc.

If you own a local business, it’s important to include your location prominently on your website. You may also want to add your company to Google Maps to help your customers find you. Obviously, if you’re shipping products and services nationally or internationally, the location isn’t as important, unless it’s important for your product. For example, if you’re selling wine, you may want to stress the fact that you’re located in California, where the best vintage comes from.

3. Keep Customers on Your Site

You want to keep your visitors engaged on your site for as long as you can for two reasons: One, it’s good for your rankings. Two, that’s how they end up becoming your customers. You have to make it easy for them to stay engaged. You can do this by adding links to relevant pages on your website, adding videos, answering their questions and setting up an obvious flow of your website, encouraging them to keep clicking “next.”

4. Pay-Per-Click Advertising

There is only one instant way to get to the top of the search engine results: You must pay for advertising. The great thing about online pay-per-click advertising is that you only pay when someone actually goes to your website. From there, it’s your responsibility to keep them engaged and collect their contact information so you can follow up.
